My name is Mária Csorba, Decsi-Kiss Jánosné.
I am a bead-stringer folk artist, living in Szálka, Tolna County.
Thirty three years ago I moved to Sárköz, to a family where folk art had always been natural and treated with joy since it was part of their daily lives.
At first folk songs and dances attracted me, since I got the bases in Zalaegerszeg, Ferenc Liszt Primary School of Music from the director József Vajda who was a folk song collector respected throughout the country. Later on, I realized the beauty of the clothing, weaving and embroidery.
Finding myself bead-stringing was not on purpose. I learnt the simpler patterns from my daughter who used to attend bead-stringing lessons at beloved Aunt Éva Berekai and her daughter Aunt Éva Oláh.

In 1992 with my husband we started to operate a summer art camp for young people in Szálka, where besides their own professional programs we made volunteered to get the participants to get to know and learn the basis of the traditional folk trades of the area.

Since 1993 I have held the bead stringing workshops, which made me learn more about it and collect old patterns of bead necklaces from the area.
For this work in 1995 I handed in a tender to Pro Renovanda Cultura Hungariae, who accepted it and supported me with a smaller amount of money.

In the academic year 1997-98 I completed a course organized by the Hungarian Institution of Education and the Vörösmarty Cultural House, Bonyhád. I graduated as workshop leader of folk playhouse, and I wrote my extended essay on Sárköz bead-collars. The opinion of Dr. Gábor Tarján of my essay is: "It is a valuable work, great literature adaptation and a really interesting collection. The pictures are also excellent. It is worth publishing!"

Until 1997 I had not felt the courage to take my bead work in front of the jury, but then due to the encouragement of the chairman and secretary of the Tolna County Folk Art Union I tried myself. Since that time I ask for the control and professional opinion of the NIT.

I have been a member of the Tolna County Folk Art Union since 1996 and was elected chairman of the control committee in 1999 and the secretary of the union in 2000. I have been taking part in exhibitions since I became a member of the union.
My husband and I had a common exhibition in Simontornya in the Castle Museum in 1997, after that in 1999 I had exhibitions in Bautzen and Nedaschütz in the German twin-county of Tolna County.

In 1999 I won first prize in Living Folk Art county tender, and four of my works are in the national exhibition.
In 2000 and 2001 my bead necklaces were awarded in the Museum of Handicrafts at a tender for crafts.
In 2000 I won the third prize in Kecskemét, at the VI National Folk Trade Arts tender, in the Museum of Folk Handicrafts.
In 2000 November I got the title of folk artist.
In 2001 I had a common exhibition with Márta Oláh in Csurgó.
In 2002 I had an exhibition together with folk artists from Tolna County in the exhibition hall of the Folk Handicrafts Council.
In 2003 I won the second prize in Kecskemét, at the VII National Folk Trade Arts tender.
